Cold Day Cooking

Cooking is fun for me, and a bit therapeutic. It really does combine this science of artistic nature into one activity. The artistic nature really seem a bit self-explainitory. You are improvising somewhat and going with instinct (assuming you are adventurous) and you hopefully in the end have a dish which is quite literally, a feast for the senses. Now the science of cooking spikes my curiosity as well because I enjoy really digging into not just WHY adding olive oil to one dish makes it taste better, but the science of WHY it makes it taste better. Is it a consistency issue? Does the emulsification help to enhance flavor? Is it merely a flavor enhancer? Sometimes these answers come merely by wondering, and then being observant, but sometimes I'll do a bit of quick research to really figure out why doing something a certain way, or certain order, or adding this or that ingredient produce the desired result (or sometimes, an undesired result.)

Tonight, I made a soup that I've made before. I always try and take a twist or two on my previous attempts just to see what works well and doesn't. Tonight was a Sweet Corn Crab Bisque. I was able to do it with relatively low effort and I am pleased with how it came out. It's quite rich, but I should be able to freeze a bit of this and enjoy it for a while. Tonight, it's been nice to enjoy with a bit of glass-bottled Coca-Cola, and some relaxation.

In relation to the above topics, I have to add that I love Trader Joes. It's one of those stores, that if you have money, you almost always end up buying at least one thing more than you intended to when you walked in the front door. Today was no different, and I was being adventurous looking over the selections. The cold and rainy day only hightend my desire to get out of the house and find something interesting.

They then went upstairs and ransacked some more stealing my roommate Nick's laptop, camcorder and digital camera as well as his removable hard drive. The boldly just walked out the backdoor after they were finished. I called the Atlanta Police and after a lengthy wait, they arrived and took a report. It's unlikely that we'll ever seen any of it again. They had someone come out and dust for prints too.

Meh... It really sucks. It makes you feel both angry, and violated. All I can do is secure the house even more and try to prevent it from happening again. In the mean time, I'll have to work doubly hard to catch up on GMAT study time that I lost cleaning up and running errands to try and re-secure the house... as well as the expenses incurred for it, and the valuables lost.

Pride Weekend; studying

So pride was this past weekend. I had to work Friday and Saturday night. It was a concession I made to make SURE that I had Sunday off. The highlight of the weekend is the parade, and I wanted to be able to see that. KC and I woke up and walked over to 5th & Peachtree St. to find our spot. We arrived and shortly thereafter the parade made its way down Peachtree. It appeared larger than last year's probably due to the sunny weather. It was a great parade filled with both the zany and outlandish, and also the heartstring tugging moments like the proud gay parents marching, and various Atlanta area churches showing support. After a break at the GT bookstore, we made our way over to Piedmont Park to walk around the festival. It was a lot of fun bumping into friends all over the place. The heat was tremendous so a break here and there were required, but we made our full round around the park looking at the various displays and even stopping in at the AIDS Walk tent to signup, and I got vaccinated for Hepatitis A&B at the HepTeamAtlanta tent. So a great day all in all filled with entertainment, touching sentiment, and social responsibility. :)

Now back to reality, and... I do not enjoy studying for tests... (GMAT) grrr.

Graduation; website updates; next?

Well, it is done. I've finally graduated from college, and I cannot tell you how bittersweet I am over this huge transition in my life. This started as a crazy idea of mine back in 1999 to go back to school at Georgia State University, and has ended up 8 years later with a transfer to Georgia Tech and a degree from the same. I could never have dreamed that my life would have played out this way, but I always knew it was never going to play out in the conventional way. Things have always been different for me, and I'm just blessed to have had the opportunities and rewards that I've been given. Going back to school was one of the best and most important decisions I've made in my life, not in just the education I've received but in the people I've been lucky enough to meet. From my friends at GSU like Alyssa, Jeff, Nolan, Justin, and the rest, to my friends at Tech, like Scott, KC, Ob, and so many many more. There's no way to even begin to contemplate how my life has change as a result of these people and this education, but without a doubt, it has been for the better.

So I've been doing tweaks to the website (adamcaskey.com) and hopefully, making ongoing improvements over the next several months, so be sure to keep an eye out. Beyond that, the summer is going well thus far. I've been working a lot trying to keep the bills paid and the lights on, and in the down hours, planning my next move. Everyone keeps asking "so, what's next Adam?", and well honestly, I don't know yet, but that doesn't mean I lack ideas. The short answer: either Grad school, or a job. But in reality the answer is a bit more complicated. Nevertheless, don't assume that things are busily in progress behind the scenes, I just like to work and deliberate on these big life decisions on my own and then announce them when things are more finalized, rather than call the play-by-play of every turn and outcome. Hopefully I'll know something firm soon, but in the meantime, it's exciting to know that within the next year, my life is going to be very different and hopefully exciting and challenging, whatever the outcome. For now, it's get ready for working tonight at Roasters, and look forward to boyfriend time later tonight.

I'm also using a new blogging tool, so hopefully my journals on Myspace, LiveJournal, Facebook, and my website adamcaskey.com will all be tied-in and updated together! The "master" blog still lives on livejournal/adamcaskey.com which has my complete blog history, but hopefully future blog updates will at least be mirrored on the Myspace and Facebook. More updates to come!

Today it did quite literally as I found a $20 bill on the ground while walking to class. Not a bad way to start the day. I went to my nooner, and then went over to the Student Center to check mail and drop by the PA office to see the peeps. I miss having class on this side of campus. I feel like I miss out on an energy and such by being at Tech Square most of the time. Hah, I also miss my clockwork-like visits to Pandini's. Good times.

In other news, I now have accPod2: an 80gig black iPod to replace accPod1, the poor thing. This 5th gen iPod is a lot different, but I'm enjoying it thus far. I'd still like a nano just for working out. I think that's perfect for running and such, but on the whole, for most of the time, I really like having my entire music library available to my every whim and mood. Why "get that damn song out of your head" when you can just cue it up and listen to it on repeat for 2 hours?

Well I'm up here at the Student Center right now at like 4:23am on this lovely little Friday night having just scanned in my 300+ page course packet for Strategic Management class. I had to come up here in the middle of the night so I wasn’t interrupting anyone else’s copying. (I use the copiers up here to digitally bulk scan the packet.) Plus, I'm at my prime late at night anyhow of course! But thank goodness I got that packet scanned. That sucker is too big to drag to class every day, so having it in a PDF on my laptop is much nicer, plus it's text searchable once I run the OCR software through it. Nice.

The weather outside is crazy nice. Mind you, it is nearly perverse for it to be this warm during January, but it's so mild outside, that I nearly want to throw my bag into the trunk of Mobile 7, and put the iPod on and take a walk... and I just might. To hell with the time. Anyone wanna toss the frisbee around tomorrow!?!

For a final semester of my undergraduate colligate career, I will admit, it will be some work. I think after that first day, the bulk of the workload seems to be centered on the readings and case studies. So I'll really need to stay on top of that. I've already ordered my books, and hopefully those will arrive shortly. I just got done importing all of the schedules into Outlook, so now I have those sync'd in my Treo, which is nice. Tomorrow (Wednesday) will be busy I'm sure. It's that first "real" day of class. The day when you really get down to notes, and PowerPoint slides, and class interaction. No more, "here's your syllabus, have a nice day!" Ah well, time to get a crackin'!

In other news, my classic 3rd gen iPod seems to have developed bad sectors on its hard drive. *sigh*. I mean, granted, I have sucked more life than I should have been allowed to out of that thing, so that's okay. The fact that it has extra buttons, and a non-color screen still seems to amaze people. But, as of right now, I can't put fill up more than 4 or 5 gigs of its 20 gig capacity, which sucks. If anyone knows of a way (other than all the conventional means, which I've already tried), that you can easily mark the bad sector(s) and use the rest of the drive's capacity, let me know! Of course, now the new iPhone is out, and everyone's talking about how great it would be to get that. But, jeez, I already have a powerful phone in my Treo... and do I really want to wait around for that thing to finally come out, then go to the trouble of switching carriers and all that?... and what do I do in the meantime... go with my crippled iPod? *shrug* Either way, for now I'm going to see how finances (and the marketplace) go and try and suck a 'lil more of life out of 'ole accPod 1.

wallet replacement errands; looking ahead to the holiday weekend

What a hectic day of running around it's been. Losing one's wallet is never a fun prospect, but sometimes it's the pain of having to go run around to get all the cards and such replaced that's a bigger hassle than losing the money inside of it. Well... and I have to buy a new wallet. Ah my faith in humanity is shaken. But ah well.

The DMV today wasn't too bad. I wasn't sure if I was going to be stuck there for hours, but I went to the one up in Norcross and I was able to speed through the place pretty quickly. After that it was off to the bank where they were out of temporary ATM cards and out of pretty much anything that I needed, so after getting nowhere there, I went back to Tech campus to get my BuzzCard replaced. I didn't realize how much I use my BuzzCard... since I use it to work-out at the CRC, and to park, and to gain building entry... that qualifies it as a pretty high priority item for replacement. Which it better be seeing as how it has been the most expensive thing to replace thus far. Luckily they were still open today (about the only thing in the Student Center that was, besides Hair Cuttery.)

I'll head to work in a few to work one of my two shifts this week. I'll admit to being tired though. This is the first day since finals started that I have been able to get anywhere CLOSE to a "normal" sleep schedule, and even today I slept somewhat late. That "finals week" really threw things out of whack. But, hopefully I can steer them back to normal.

I'm amused that everyone keeps asking me if I'm going home for the holidays. I mean... I AM home. This is pretty much home to me. Granted, my parents and most of my brothers live in the suburbs out in Gwinnett not too far away, but I can just hop in the car and visit them during Christmas and Christmas Eve. I suspect it will be a quieter holiday this year with it being somewhat lean financially within the family, and with fewer people in town. In some ways, that might be nice. In other ways, perhaps a little lonelier. My boyfriend will head out of town on Friday to visit family out of state, and with most of the techies out of town as well, it will be fairly quiet outside of the family going's-ons. I will have the big Christmas Eve party to cook for though, and that should be a good deal of work this weekend. Both stressful and fun though. We'll see!

Things with KC are well, and it's somewhat funny how often people ask. Things at work are also fine. The days vary, I never know how busy any given night will be, and thus, how profitable. I'm just working on being able to turnover as fast as possible to increase sales. Also, I need to win the lottery. I don't play, because I can't afford to, but I still need to win, so if you know how I can swing that, lemmie know!

Happy Thanksging to all!

It's me, Adam, here in Dowling Park, Florida, a small quiet and God fearing community in rural Florida. I'm here with the brother and parents to visit our Grandmother for Thanksgiving and relax a bit. I'm actually posting this from my Treo as I actually have cellular service here for the first time ever. It's quite remarkable given how far in the middle of nowhere we are. nevertheless I'm enjoying my post meal lethargy and sending a Happy Thanksgiving to all. Have a great one. (Verizon wireless?) does during the game, and they send you scores, and updates, and trivia, and you can win random prizes and such. Well about 10 mins before halftime, I’m up there and I get this text message “Sting Mobile wants you…. You get to watch the second half from the sideline! We are coming to your seat to give you the prize!” Well like a few minutes later this guy shows up at my row, and is like “Are you RadioACC?”… and I’m like “yea”… and he says, “Come with me.” And I’m quickly swept away down to the field entrance, and given an All-Access sideline pass. It rocked, I got to go into the tunnel and get some PowerAde and then chill out while the band played, and then spent the rest of the game on the sidelines, watching us play to victory. I will say that I typically have more fun in the stands with my friends though. It’s a bit subdued on the sidelines. But having never been on the sidelines during a game, I was having fun.

After the game, Scott, Colt and I headed back to the townhouse, and then Scott and I went and picked up Nate and got ourselves some Jason’s Deli. Mmmm. Love that stuff. Then it was back to the pad to clean up and prepare for the night’s activities. I went over to Ob’s house, where he was throwing a little party of sorts. All of the usual Ob crowd was in attendance. It was good times. After that, I headed back to the pad to chill with some friends and start to wind down from the long day. Not a bad Saturday!
